Growing Together: Why Supporting Small Businesses Matters

In Ahmedabad, small businesses are often where you find the most interesting things. A cafe tucked into a familiar neighbourhood, a homegrown label being run from a small studio, an artist turning a hobby into a business, or a maker creating something completely different from what you usually see. These businesses may not have the reach of large brands, but they bring personality to the city and give people more reasons to explore what is around them.
At Crazy Plant Lady Cafe, we have always liked being part of that ecosystem. We built Crazy Plant Lady Cafe as more than a place to eat and drink. It is a plant cafe in Ahmedabad where people can spend time over coffee, work for a while, attend a creative workshop, discover new plants or simply meet friends. Naturally, that has also made us interested in the people and small brands creating things around us.
One of the simplest ways we can support them is by giving them a physical space to be discovered.
Small Businesses Need More Than Visibility
For a small business, getting noticed can be one of the hardest parts of growing. Having a good product is one thing; getting it in front of the right people is another.
Social media has made it easier for homegrown brands to reach customers, but there is still a difference between seeing something on your phone and actually meeting the person behind it. You can ask questions, understand the story, see the product properly and perhaps discover something you would have scrolled past otherwise.
That is one of the reasons we occasionally bring homegrown brands into the cafe. Our Brand of the Week gives a different brand a little space over a Saturday and Sunday, while pop-ups and collaborations allow us to introduce our community to people making and building interesting things locally.
It does not have to be a grand gesture. Sometimes, giving a small business a few days of visibility in a space that already has people coming through the door can open a completely new avenue for them.

Why Buying Local Feels Different
There is something particularly satisfying about knowing where your money is going.
When you buy from an independent brand, there is usually a person or a small team directly involved in almost every part of the process. They may be sourcing materials, designing products, managing orders, answering customer messages and figuring out marketing all at once.
Your purchase therefore has a very tangible impact. It can help a business place its next order, experiment with a new product, participate in another market or simply keep doing what it has been working so hard to build.
But supporting small businesses is not limited to making purchases. Recommending a local brand, leaving a thoughtful review, sharing their work or bringing a friend along to a pop-up can be just as useful. For businesses that are still finding their audience, genuine word-of-mouth can mean a lot.
Local Businesses Make Ahmedabad More Interesting
Spend enough time exploring cafes in Ahmedabad, and you quickly realise that no two places need to feel the same. Independent spaces often have their own personality, shaped by the food they serve, the people who run them, the interiors, the ideas they bring to life and, most importantly, the community that gathers around them.
That variety is worth protecting.
A local cafe can become someone's regular weekend spot, while a small creative business can introduce people to something they would never have come across otherwise. You might walk into a place for a cup of coffee and end up discovering a new artist, joining a workshop or finding a homegrown brand that becomes a favourite.
That is the role we want Crazy Plant Lady Cafe to play too. As a plant-themed cafe in Ahmedabad, plants are naturally part of our space, but they are only one part of the experience. Food, coffee, creativity and people all have a place here, and we like that each of them can bring someone through our doors for a different reason.
Creating Space for Other Ideas
We also believe small businesses benefit when they have opportunities to meet other people doing something similar.
A maker might meet an artist. An artist might meet a cafe owner. A customer might discover a brand and introduce it to someone else. A casual conversation during a weekend pop-up might eventually become a collaboration.
Not every interaction has to lead somewhere, and that is perfectly fine. The point is to create opportunities for those connections to happen in the first place.
This is something we value across our community initiatives, including creative workshops in Ahmedabad. We enjoy bringing people together around something they can participate in rather than simply giving them another reason to consume.
The same thinking applies when a homegrown brand occupies a corner of our cafe for a weekend. It becomes part of the atmosphere rather than feeling like a separate commercial experience.

Supporting Small Businesses Is About People
It is easy to talk about “supporting local” as if it is simply a purchasing decision, but there is a more human side to it.
Behind every small business is someone taking a chance on an idea. They may still be learning how to price their products, market themselves, manage demand or balance the business with everything else life requires.
That stage can be exciting, but it can also be difficult.
A little encouragement can make a difference. A customer who returns, a recommendation that brings someone new, or an opportunity to showcase their work can give a growing brand the push it needs to take its next step.
We understand that because we are a business too. We know that growth is rarely one dramatic moment. More often, it comes from hundreds of small decisions and interactions that slowly build something stronger.
Growing Together
For us, supporting small businesses fits naturally into what Crazy Plant Lady Cafe is trying to create in Ahmedabad.
We want the cafe to be a place where you can enjoy a good cup of coffee, find gluten free food in Ahmedabad, spend a few productive hours at a co working cafe in Ahmedabad, explore plants, join an art workshop or simply sit with a friend and take your time.
And every so often, we want you to discover something you were not looking for at all.
Maybe that is a homegrown brand. Maybe it is a new creator. Maybe it is an idea that stays with you after you leave.
That sense of discovery is valuable, and so are the businesses that make a city worth discovering.
Supporting them does not require a grand gesture. Sometimes it starts with choosing the local option, being curious enough to stop and look, or telling someone else about a business you genuinely enjoyed.
That is how communities grow: not all at once, but through small businesses, small interactions and people choosing to support one another along the way.
If you are in Ahmedabad, come spend some time at Crazy Plant Lady Cafe. Grab a coffee, explore our plants, enjoy a meal and keep an eye out for the homegrown brands and creative experiences that occasionally become part of the Crazy Plant Lady space.
